More than a new logo

A ring, two letters and a decision about what the company is willing to promise.

Changing an identity is an odd exercise for an engineering company. Nothing about a logo makes a deposit clear faster. And yet the argument that produced this one was not about taste. It was about what AU is prepared to promise, and whether the old marks said it.

Why a ring

AU does not sell devices and leave. The business is a loop: survey the site, supply and install, keep it alive, extend it, then do it again as the estate changes. The ring is the plainest possible drawing of that loop, closed rather than open, with the letters held inside it rather than sitting beside it. It reads at eight pixels on a status light and at eight metres on a service van.

The mark had one job: to look like a company that comes back.

Why the blue is rationed

Most technology brands use their colour as wallpaper. We use it as a signal. Structure is drawn in deep navy and quiet greys. The brand blue is kept for the thing that is live: the active step, the node that is responding, the state that changed. When everything is blue, nothing is, and an interface that reports on machines cannot afford that.

The rules we now hold ourselves to

  • 01The ring frames numerals, active states and section marks. It is never redrawn or stretched.
  • 02Brand blue marks what is live. Navy carries structure.
  • 03Technical and operational content lives on one dark instrument surface, so a reader always knows when they are looking at machinery.
  • 04Numbers are set in mono with fixed widths, because figures that jump while they update look untrustworthy.

That is the whole system, and its usefulness is that it says no. An identity that permits anything is a mood board. This one keeps a company that has been operating since 1981 looking like one thing across a service report, a terminal screen and a website.
